Abstract

The concept of social vulnerability associates two essential elements; the risk of a person or group to be harmed when facing a possible contingency and their incapacity to avoid, reduce and/or face the harmful the effects of those events. In the current Western societies, vulnerability is closely linked to unstable jobs, fragile social relationships, and lack of access to social benefits. This paper/article analyzes the social vulnerability perceived by the Spanish and Basque populations in the economic crisis from data obtained since 2013 to 2015 by the CIS (The Spanish Sociology Research Center) and the Deustobarómetro Social (DBSoc). The analysis identifies the groups that perceive they are vulnerable to job loss, worsening of their working conditions, cut of their household expenses, and also shows the groups’ capacity to access family and friend support, welfare benefits or other benefits from associations.
