Abstract

This article offers some observations about the theoretical development of the sociology of literature, paying special attention to the problematical relationship between literary work and social context. It considers the concept of the literary field elaborated by Pierre Bourdieu, the most recent attempt to resolve that relationship, and shows how some of Bourdieu’s assumptions weaken his model. Finally, it argues that a comparative approach is the best way to construct a solid theoretical framework for sociology of literature.
