Familiar Landscapes of Inmigration

Abstract

Taking into account the data of the Population Census of 2001, we analyze four migratory models that are present in the Spanish society: the Chinese, the Moroccan, the Dominican and the Ecuadorian. Each of them is characterized by a specific combination of three main factors: different ways of labor insertion, gender relationships and family configurations. These combinations remit to the two essential dimensions of the immigration phenomenon: the temporary (migrants undergo different moments throughout their trajectory) and the spatial (their practices are structured by the symbolic and material tension between the here and the yonder). Depending on the elucidation of these models and their features we will be able to answer the questions that are arising about immigrant families: how and in which direction will they reproduce? What panorama is displayed to the new generations (second and subsequent) of their members?

Luis A. Camarero Rioja, Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia

Doctor en sociología y profesor del Departamento de Teoría, Metodología y Cambio Social de la UNED. Su trayectoria como investigador ha combinado el estudio sobre las transformaciones de las sociedades rurales, con especial atención a temas de género y demografía, con la reflexión sobre cuestiones metodológicas. Fruto de esta trayectoria son varias decenas de textos publicados, conferencias y premios nacionales de investigación. Es miembro del Seminario de Estudios Rurales fundado en los años ochenta por el profesor Josechu Mazariegos.

Iñaki García Borrego, Universidad Carlos III

Profesor ayudante del Departamento de Ciencia Política y Sociología de la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. Ha publicado diversos trabajos sobre la inmigración, entre los que destacan «Los hijos de inmigrantes como tema sociológico» (Anduli: revista andaluza de ciencias sociales, 3, 2003) e «Inmigración y consumo: planteamiento del objeto de estudio» (con Jorge García López, Política y sociedad, 39, 1, 2002). Actualmente ultima una tesis doctoral sobre los hijos de inmigrantes en la Comunidad de Madrid, bajo la codirección de Liliana Suárez y Luis Camarero.
