Abstract

This study examines the genesis of the concept of Third Spain in the work of Salvador de Madariaga, analysing how his interpretation was transformed from a critique of the dichotomy of the two Spains to a proposal for national reconciliation. Based on the analysis of three key phases in his intellectual development, in the first phase he questions ideological polarisation by attributing national problems to collective psychology; in the second, the experience of the Second Republic and the Civil War prompts him to propose the Third Spain as a mediating force; and in the third, during his exile, the concept is consolidated as an interpretative tool in the form of a political-ideological alternative through Europeanisation. Although it did not materialise as an effective political alternative, the notion of the Third Spain consolidated a discourse that called for overcoming historical divisions, promoting a vision that overcame the problem of Spain and was oriented towards European integration.
