Abstract

The sense of our own worth is one of the most indispensable moral traits that shape an individual’s personality. In this paper I take up the idea of natural pride in the sense given to it by David Hume and show how pride, with its individual component of self-esteem and its social element of recognition, generates positive consequences for the human ties that make up the social order. The mechanism that explains this functioning is the psychology of sympathy that ends up embracing society’s relationships. The passion of pride and sympathy as a device for communicating emotions among peers have beneficial effects on the cohesion of our community life
