Abstract

Adolfo Martín-Gamero, director of the Office of Diplomatic Information, managed the interviews that Franco gave to international media journalists between 1958 and 1968. Based on previously unpublished documentation filed at the Real Academia de la Historia, this study analyses the context and the contents of those journalistic meetings, which were part of the propaganda strategy of the dictatorship, and in which the diplomat was involved as an interpreter. The conclusions emphasize the importance given by Francoism to the US media (especially The New York Times) due to the influence of their international ally over the public opinion, and Le Figaro, which helped establishing closer trade relations with France and so facilitating the Spanish accession to the Common Market.
