Abstract

The article aims to contribute to the literature on the impact of populism on foreign policy through an analysis of the discourse and international performance of two Italian populist movements, the Movimento Cinque Stelle and Fratelli d’Italia between 2012 and 2024. It uses a qualitative method based on discourse and document analysis. Through a manual coding process, it analyzes a wide variety of sources, such as parliamentary speeches, electoral programs, government documents, legislative actions, and statements in the media by the leaders and representatives of both movements. In line with the main questions and hypotheses extracted from the literature on populism and foreign policy, the goal is to find possible differences and similarities in the foreign policy discourses and actions of both movements and to find out if their presence, both in the opposition and in the government, has meant a change in the foreign policy of previous Italian governments led by non-populist parties.
