Abstract

Money plays a crucial role in Locke’s justification of land appropriation, as it helps overcome the difficulties posed by the sufficiency proviso to that appropriation. Yet money shows up in the argument in media res: Locke never explains how precious metals that serve as money can be appropriated in the first place, even though their appropriation is also subject to the sufficiency proviso. We will argue that this omission can be rectified by applying to the appropriation of precious metals the same reasoning Locke employed when justifying the appropriation of land. However, this strategy forces us to deny that Locke’s theory of appropriation is purely unilateral, and instead embrace the idea that his is a mixed theory combining unilateral as well as conventionalist justifications of appropriation.
