Abstract

This article explores the role of television in recovering censored or forgotten culture under the dictatorship in Spain and Portugal. The study focuses on the programming of RTP and TVE during the democratisation processes, analysing various programmes’ audiovisual and discursive languages, particularly those centred on literature, art and socio-political issues. Several of these programmes gave a platform to opponents of the Salazar and Franco regimes, who had been invisible for decades, exposing the realities of repression and exile. In the Iberian Peninsula, the small screen contributed to reviving a silenced culture, as well as to exhuming the memory of the Republican period and the anti-fascist struggle. Television became an essential medium for reappropriating the past in both countries, providing space for artistic and intellectual figures to re-enter public debate.
