Abstract

This article analyzes the political thought of Francisco Ayala from his return
from exile in 1976 until the year 1996, when his production in this field drastically decreased. During these two decades, the Granada-born author continued to address and delve into the issues that had been part of his theoretical corpus since his youth: concern for nationalisms, the decline of ideologies, the role of intellectuals, and so on. In addition to these recurring themes, during the political Transition period, he also addressed other issues relevant to the time, ranging from political change to the meaning of dictatorship and the future of Spain. To convey these complex and extensive concerns, he primarily relied on newspaper articles rather than essays, in order to reach a wider audience in an accessible manner.
