Abstract

This paper examines the mechanisms, both preventive and repressive, currently contained in EU Law in order to ensure budgetary discipline in the European Monetary Union. It also analyzes the main innovations contained in the recent proposals for deepening of the Fiscal Union, as well as the use of intergovernmental legal instruments with the purpose of ensuring budgetary stability in the Eurozone and the implications that this may have in the light of the democratic principle.
