Abstract

In June 2019, the highly expected «European Accessibility Act» came into force. Given that the number of persons with disabilities (including those with functional limitations) will grow significantly in the coming years, an accessible and inclusive environment facilitating the autonomous life of all persons is an important goal for European societies. In this regard, the Directive seeks to harmonize diverging national regulations on the accessibility of products and services, thus improving trade between Member States and hence reinforcing the internal market. However, the new Directive has been criticized as well. Issues such as the exemption of microenterprises from its provisions or the long periods allowed for transposition and application are some of the aspects analyzed in this study.
