The struggle for women’s rights has manifested itself in very different contexts since its beginnings and, even with notable advances, continues today. The defense of women’s civil, political and social rights by the first women jurists has had a special impact on this struggle. Those forerunners blazed a trail that other women jurists have been able to follow in order to expand and consolidate women’s rights. This article shows how those women, even without knowing the repercussions of their own legacy, laid the foundations of a legal feminism on which today’s women jurists can rely to transform law and rights in a democratic society in which the equality of women and men is an essential element of its structure.
