Abstract

This article analyzes the consequences of state intervention on wine cooperatives under the authoritarian regimes of Mussolini in Italy and Franco in Spain until the 1950s. It is argued that the nature of the state intervention was quite similar in both countries, since the Franco regime took the corporatist organization of the fascist regime as a model, although the consequences of the state’s action were more profound in the case of Spain, mainly due to the longer duration of the Franco regime and also because the great expansion of wine cooperatives took place in Spain during Franco’s dictatorship.
