The city as fact in catalonia: areas of cohesion
Abstract
The paper is based on the hypothesis of there being a new concept of the city. This city, once thought of as being self-sufficient and clearly bounded, is here held to have become - and this most especially in recent years - an unclear space whose boundaries are both now more farreaching and, in the main, non-demarcated. With these considerations in mind, the paper's main object is a determining of the true scope of such a city as within the Catalonia Region. In general terms the principal and basic parameter for an establishing of the new dimensions of any city, be this a non-bounded city, a city area, or city as fact, is here held to be the radius of its labour force's unavoidable travel. The chosen parameter for this determining of the travel relation home/work place was culled from a contrasting of the Census returns for 1981 and 1986. This relation home/work place then work place/home as to two municipalities is here used in order to define a "cohesion concept", this once the travel factors in both cases have been assessed.
