Abstract

During the latter part of the 19th Century, city government is here said to have assumed the need for giving its area gardens, parks and other green zones to meet both social and health demands. This process led to the setting up of specialized services within city government, which, in the case of Barcelona was done seriously and in the most modern of ways in 1917. The outstanding figure in this field was D. Nicolás M.ª Rubio and Tuduri from its founding through till 1937, during which time he laid down the city's basic green zone system. The paper speaks of how he was much influenced by the «garden city», planning model and by the ideas of the french engineer J. C. N. Forestier throughout the period for which he headed the Barcelona City Hall Public Parks and Woods Office, a period in which his interventions were to play a leading part in changing the city's face.
