Abstract

Today the ecological value of coastal wetlands, especially in urban areas, is widely recognized, and the policies for their preservation have increased considerably. Historical studies can provide relevant data for the shaping of such policies. To contribute to the history of the relationship between nature and city, regarding the transformation of the Laguna del Carpintero and the configuration of the modern urban space of the city-port of Tampico, on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, archival documentation, traveller stories, projects and urban plans were analyzed and contrasted. The article shows how the different logics of artificialization, which began with sketches of ideas during the colonial period and then, in the Republican period, became urban projects and plans in the framework of hygienism and developmentalism contributed to the imbalance between nature and artificialization.
