A location model for detecting out of balance: Growth possibilities for Spanish regions
Abstract
The paper has a double focus and goes further into the specification of a regional-sectoral prediction model, built-up around the Theory of Spatial Location. This model uses two basic concepts: the difference between an optimum growth level in the relationship as between sector and region and that offered in reality, and the existence of a gradual adjustment process as between both values. Having estimated the same, the paper considers its transformation into an instrument apt to be used for making predictions by taking the 74 regions of the present-day European Union and the year 1995 as its study object. The results are of interest as they show a general and predominating tendency towards the redistribution of economic activity out towards the European periphery, this although each sector is also revealed to have its own particularities. Within this overview Spain's regional system seems to be doing well and in support of this opinion the paper indicates some internal readjustment developments along with their particularizing characteristics.
