Municipal Population as Shown by 20 Century Census Findings
Abstract
This paper presents a homogenous database for the Spanish population at the municipal level as well as some
findings as to the location of the population within territory during 20 Century. The database reconstructs the
de jure population of 8.108 municipalities as shown by the 2001 census. The reconstruction has been effected
by maintaining the municipal boundaries that then existed at the time of that census, it being the latest made
in Spain, doing so to the purpose of guaranteeing the temporal homogeneity of the series. From this database,
changes in the location of the population in Spain between 1900 and 2001 can be observed allowing for an accurate
measuring of the phenomenon in question that, hitherto was only known to the specialist in its general outlines.
