Journal History

Journal history: 50 years of CyTET “Ciudad y Territorio Estudios Territoriales”

CyTET journal is one of the oldest in Spanish language on urban and spatial planning, since its origin dates back to 1968. The current journal is the confluence of several previous journals that have been integrated over time, in order to create the current CyTET “Ciudad y Territorio Estudios Territoriales”. In the 50 years since its inception, CyTET has published more than 2,000 articles by prestigious professionals and academics related to the city and territory, in which the evolution and trajectory of scientific thought and professional practice can be followed in these subjects.

In 1968, the Instituto de Estudios de la Administración Local (Institute of Studies of the Local Administration) created the “Revista Ciencia Urbana” journal, directed by Ramón Martín Mateo. The following year, the journal “Ciudad y Territorio Revista de Urbanismo y Ordenación Territorial”, was created, directed by Fernando Terán. In 1970, Instituto de Estudios de la Administración Local integrated both publications with the title “Ciudad y Territorio Revista de Ciencia Urbana”, remaining under the direction of Professor Fernando de Terán until 1989. In 1990, already within the Instituto Nacional de la Administración Pública (INAP: National Institute of Administration Pública), Carmen Gavira assumed the direction of the journal (1990-1992).

The Ministry of Public Works and Urbanism created the journal “Estudios Territoriales” in 1981, within the Centro de Estudios de Ordenación del Territorio y del Medio Ambiente (Center for the Study of Territorial Planning and the Environment), posteriormente ITUR (Instituto del Territorio y Urbanismo: Institute of Territory and Urbanism). Its directors were José González Paz (1981-1983), Antonio Vázquez Barquero (1984-1987), Carlos Giménez de la Cuadra (1988-1992) and Javier García-Bellido (1992).

In 1993, within the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, “Ciudad y Territorio” (which had 94 published numbers) were again integrated with “Estudios Territoriales” (40 numbers), giving rise to the current magazine CyTET “Ciudad y Territorio Estudios Territoriales”, which collects and synthesizes the baggage and the fruitful trajectories of all the previous journals. Its director during the Third Era was Javier García Bellido (from 1993 until his death in 2006). From 2010 to the present (Fourth Era) its director is Professor Rafael Mata Olmo. Under the current name of CyTET “Ciudad y Territorio Estudios Territoriales”, more than 100 issues have been published since 1993, with more than 1,000 articles.
