Different historical layers related to the urban, social, and political evolution of the city are superimposed on the multifaceted site of the old Plaza de Armas in Barcelona. Located in the Parc de la Ciutadella, its present layout derives from the 1916 project by the French engineer and town planner Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier. The progressive deterioration of its significant elements led to a competition for the improvement of the park and of the square. Through methodical historical research, a heritage recovery strategy, and in line with a new environmental sensitivity in urban interventions, PCG Architecture and Engineering's proposal revealed singularities about Forestier's original project not yet fully explored. On this basis, the intervention produced the regeneration of the identity of a sustainable and biodiverse space, recovering a central piece of Barcelona's urban landscape.
