Abstract

Analytical appraisal of the reform of an important public space in Madrid, executed between 2016 and 2022under two different municipal governments. The extension of the former tunnel under Bailén street from Ferraz street, near its encounter with Ventura Rodriguez, until few meters before Mayor street, has allowed the direct union for pedestrians of the square with the Temple of Debod gardens, the Sabatini gardens and Oriente square.

The opening without any type of restriction of Sabatini gardens, the radical alteration of the transversal section of Bailén street, the lose of a number of mature shadow trees and the use of high quality building materials in places not easy to be maintained in proper state, are in our opinion the more debatable aspects of a project whose urban relevance can’t be denied.
