Abstract

The debate on housing is still a live one, although certain concerns about access to housing had already been taken into account in earlier centuries, when social concerns were accentuated by migratory movements. We have chosen to focus on one source, the press, and a medium-sized city, Badajoz, although the paper also reflects on nationwide regulations and public developments at a national and provincial level. The period chosen for the study, between 1900 and 1975, is of interest because it shows the evolution of certain euphemisms, using such terms as “cheap or economical homes”, “working-class neighbourhoods”, “social or limited-rent housing” and “officially protected housing”; while at the same time reference is also made to the concern for urban planning, interior distribution and architectural aesthetics. The issues posed by suburbs, green-belt developments and absorption estates also came to light during this period.
