Territorial restructuring and middle sized towns in Argentina

Abstract

The paper comments the fact that over the last twenty years demographic growth in Argentina has been greater in middle sized towns than in metropolitan areas putting this down to social changes in behavior, industrial reconversion, and new distribution patterns for services such as Health, Education etc. When analyzing this shift, the author has taken into account questions such as size and hierarchy, demographic dynamics, geographical location and accessibility, the region to which the population centre belongs and the possible future projection of its overall potential. It is here held that these centres of the economic restructuring process within a model of sub-centralization, on which to play out the process of techno-productive change and, in so doing, to forward the cause of regional economies.
