Abstract

This article analyses a method used in order to appraise the present state of land consumption in metropolitan areas and thus determine a Threshold of Sustainable Consumption of Land. The study in question which was centred upon the Metropolitan Area of Madrid, uses space, social, economic and environmental indicators to evaluate said sustainability at a municipal level and, thus by implication, in those different sectors that make up the metropolitan outskirts. The method used combines statistical analysis with easily understandable graphic figures that allow for a speedy recognition of sustainable and no-sustainable situations as well as the magnitude of the necessary effort that would have to be assumed in the short, medium and long term to improve the situation. The resulting diagnoses then allow for the elaboration of synthetic recommendations aimed at encouraging or not possible scenarios of already existing tendencies and the making of suggestions for future sustainable scenarios.
