Abstract

The paper speaks of how the building of the railways and their stations in the 19C. were a great leap forward in transport systems that deeply affected society, culture and the economy, the stations becoming in this symbols of progress and intergration in the modern world. Columbia, alas, is here felt to have missed out on this opportunity because of that dispersion concomitant upon warring regional interests, poor administration and union greed. She is said to have never managed to put together an integrated rail transport network nor bring together the efforts of the various companies in the sector. She is, however, said to have given up on the little she had produced, beautiful and important stations amongst all else. The author urges that this architectural heritage could be saved and the railways themselves perhaps be re-organized.
