Abstract

The author writes of the ever greater abandoning of the city centre as a living space that has led to an urban shift out to areas hitherto rural in the First World. This process is here seen to have led not only to social diversification and even new classes in the rural environment but likewise to change in the relationships between the city and countryside. He sees this, both for the problems and opportunities it offers. as a matter that must affect city and territorial planning profoundly. The paper reviews analytically international scientific writing that concerns itself with this phenomenon, especially that of the AngloSaxon world, this to the end of applying the findings of this to the same trend as obser v ed in Spain. The author?s analysis goes into the theoretical and empirical underpinning to such writings.
