The paper goes into conditions in the Spain' s Pacific colonies in 1898. To do so, said possessions are shown within the overall geopolitical world picture of the latter years of the 19"C. Beginning from a description of the government and administration holding for each colony, the paper then goes on to describe the nature and development of the differing economic models that were set up for each to then describe the economic changes these brought with them which in turn led on to a gathering movement in favour of nationhood. The second part of the paper situates Spain's Pacific colonies within the world picture appertaining then and draws attention to the ambitions of that moment's Great Powers as to these Pacific archipelagos and the way in which these international issues affected said islands.
