Abstract

The paper begins by enquiring into the links between the urban renewal and extension undergone by Spanish cities over the last century and a half and the modernizing and technological requalifying of certain sites by means of endowing them with a whole series of technical infrastructures and, first among these, such as affect transport. The paper feels that the issue has not been fully studied from a history or urbanism standpoint despite the relative abundance of studies on the same or those others that adopt a sectorial view of the matter. The main purpose of the paper is stated to be neither more than less than the formulating of a series of basic considerations on the subject that would allow for a study of the question in point with reference to to certain of Spain's principal cities during the period of reference. Using systematic change in transport modes and its development as such and urbanistic progress as structuring references for the period, an attempt is made to focus an analysis within the terms of the discovered relationships as between these.
