The City seen as an Ecological System

Abstract

The ecological system, as the modular concept in modern ecology, is here held to be applicable to an artificial construct such as the city is always and if the energy flows and cycles of the materials that define it are previously determined with some rigour. Doing so, according to the paper, is a problem more of proper focusing or relative importance than one inherent in the subject matter as such. In Spain, we are here told, there have been partial attempts at thus focusing in on cities such as Madrid and Barcelona. The results obtained are presented much like those from conventional urbanistic, geographical and similar studies.
