Abstract

The paper holds that the city, among many other things, is a social and territorial construct that depends upon transport. Its functioning is said to be only possible if available transport means can meet its call for outside supplies and distribution requirements within it and the carrying away of its effluent. They are also said to have a need for interior transport personal interconnections that will at the same time aid the various activities that are therein undertaken. The comparative analysis of the costs of various modes of transport that is here attempted is offered as a contribution to the better understanding of the consequences derived from this need of the city be it in ecological, social or economic terms.
