The region as an intellectual construct : a historical compendium map for the northern iberian peninsula
Abstract
The paper offers yet another approach to the many possible and necessary ways of understanding the notion "region " by here proposing that it should be held to be an intellectual construct or tool as both its cultivation and settling require the substituting of an artificial topography - dykes. roads, building of any sort for and upon the natural and original one. Thus understood, the region becomes the sedimentary product of all such initiatives there undertaken by man from prehistoric times through to the present and hence, as would be the case with any other human construct, it must enjoy both a history and a language appropriate to itself. As the region is a spatial entity. the manner by which this new concept of it could be best expressed is her felt to be through a new kind of map that could summarize and highlight all that was thought to be most characteristic of it. This then is the declared aim of the map to be known as Corografia Histórica del Norte de la Peninsula Ibérica (The Historical Compendium Map of the Northern Iberian Peninsula) at present being drawn up at the behest of the Spanish Ministry of Public Works. Transport and the Environment.
