Abstract

The way that space is used, be it as to function or be it as to form and the use to which constructions are put all reflect the systems of belief and the social structure of the Bubi culture. By refering herself to the house and oracular shrine as examples of domestic and ritual buildings, the author here explains the intereation as between the every day world and the supernatural. The role played by the spirit world in day to day life amongst the Bubi finds expression as a dialogue structured by means of the building which gives to it its terms of reference.
