Abstract

The strong concentration of population and activities on the coastal strip along the Bay of Biscay. especially around the main estuaries, has resulted in an increase in the demand of space and Ya decrease of natural ecosystems such as wetlands, intertidal ares and dudes. The transformation of these spaces in agricultural, urban and indutrial areas is. in many cases, irreversible. However, in 32% of the reclaimed land, obtained through drainage and isolation, natural dynamics could be restored with limited efforts. That would mean a recuperation of biological productivity, higher that the present one, and the restoration of a high-quality recreational resource.
