Abstract

The fairly rapid growth of gas street lighting in cities in the xrx century was due to two features of gas lighting: efficiency and stability, though this process was not exempt of upheavals. The analysis of installing gas lighting in the borough of Gracia, explains the behaviour and power struggle relationship between the different factions involved: the gas companies, the city council and the consumers. For the gas companies the city represented the potential market to develop monopoly practices early on. For the local authorities street lighting meant the possibility of having a say in the planning of the city's layout. As for the consumers, their influence was decisive both in view of the monopoly practices which went against their interests, and their actions in favour of giving prestige and safety to the city.
