OLYMPIC BADALONA. THE IMPACT OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES UPON ONE OF BARCELONA' S OUTLYING SATELLITE CITIES
Abstract
Badalona, in addtion to being the projected olympic site for both the basketball and boxing venues, will also be the home of the Olympic Village for the Press. To host the basketball games a new sports pavilion has been built with a capacity of 12.500 persons. The construction of the Municipal Sports Palace has brought about complex structural reworking of the city's geografic center. This it has done in two ways: first, from a standpoint of architectural innovation within the city itself and, secondly, from that of developing other spaces in the immediate or near vicinity. This article offers a detailed account of these undertakings and their import on the city. In addition, it analyzes the shortcomings and difficulties of the changes being made, thus bringing into view some of the peculiarities of Spanish city planning and the challenging problems posed by urban development in city outskirts.
