Abstract

The paper sets out to review the different possible remedies that could be adopted to assure that urban traffic din does not rise beyond that level at which it ceases to be tolerable. City planning, vehicle restrictions of all sorts, road surface type studies, tyre pressure and tread type research, the building of noise shields and building noise insulation are but a few of the means that the paper numbers among those which can be individually or communally adopted against this scourge. The paper details the different types of noise shields possible and those factors that each of these curtail to the end that such considerations might be borne in mind before an installation of this sort be decided upon.
