RAILWAY STATION ARCHITECTURE: THE «METRO» OF CARACAS
Abstract
As parts of the Metro system, its stations are public buildings that belong to both city and citizens, are spaces that relate these last to their immediate surroundings. The paper holds that the stations become the most important and dynamic element in their system. The design task here for the first stations was seen as a chance for making a positive contribution to the city and architecture itself with models that could serve the cause of change in their proper context. To meet this task's requirements, it was necessary for the fundamental concepts underlying it to be understood, for these implied both a challenge and a new way of meeting the commuter needs of the city of Caracas. The consequences of this were immediate for each of the projected stations. The paper offers for consideration the case of Estación Agua Salud, this being one of the four types discussed here namely, Propatria, Agua Salud, Caño Amarillo and La Hoyada.
