URBAN TRANSPORT AND DESIGN? WERE ONE DAY A TRAVELLER…

Abstract

The great cities of our times demand a thorough-going urban public transport network both underground and on the surface that can allow their citizens all that fluidity of movement that is there possible. Though this be so, the paper maintains that such a system would also require a clear and obvious signposting both for the regular and eventual user if the whole network is not to become a maze with lost souls wandering hither and thither in search of the right bus train or ring-road exit. Such a system would needs be as clear, simple and all-embracing as possible and yet must blend into its surroundings and quietly clear, both direct and yet be integrated within the wholeness of the city.
