Abstract

The paper argues that the present state of development of the socalled Systems of Geographical Information (SGI) both as to its hardware (cost cuts) and software (improved handling access) has led to a thorough-going revolution in the concepts «map» and «plan». The step from the traditional paper- borne graphic to what a computer's memmory can store betokens a deal more than a mere change in support substance. Ignorance of the true possibilities of SGI has led to a sub-estimating of those powerful instruments that these SGI could lend to any handling of territory whatsoever. A shortage of specialized personnel likewise cuts back on the possibilities of an optimum putting into use of all that can be offered by SGI. These twin shortfalls call for a greater «selling» of these techniques to answer the first deficiency and for training in them to meet the second. Both drives should be directed towards that king of person in society most closely tied in with such areas of administration as have most to do with matters geographical.
