Abstract

The stride from colonial to republican city called for a planning and architectural expression in the terms of the Nineteenth Century's modernity. The new state of things required an equal technical preparation in order that development could be assured. The training of engineers and the fostering of Art opened the way for neo-classical influences from the most advanced countries. Economic growth with overseas trade served to hasten on the expansion of industrialization and the city. Renewal, sanitary reform, the setting up of public services, new neighbourhoods beyond the old city limits, new transport facilities, all these had their part to play in the reshaping of the Republican City's features and gave to it a new groundspace that bespoke modernity and cut it off for evermore from the systematics proper to spanish colonialism.
