Abstract

Public and private interest has been polarized in Holland by land re-claiming that it has become a National issue. From the beginning of this century onwards, the major effort within this field has been centred on the Zuiderzee, a great sea inlet on the dutch coast. The diverse «polders» or dried-off zones created by this patient advance have been put to differing uses according to the dictates of national territorial planning ideas, some down to agriculture with not over large settlements, others down to urban or leisure requirements, some of these bearing cities of up to 100.000 inhabitants, this to the end of cutting back the over-population quotas of the Ranstad.
