Abstract

This article sets out to call our attention to those changes provoked by a metropolitan area, albeit a relatively reduced one if compared to others such as those of Madrid or Barcelona. It argues that scale here does not rob the phenomenon either of impact or importance in an outlying autonomic regional community such as Galicia is. This study of a metropolitan area's affects covers the period from 1970 to 1988 and considers the phenomenon internally (birth rate growth, changes in land usage, economic and physical conditionings, house building, ecological alteration, the standing of urban planning, etc.) and, likewise, externally (the overall Galician regional picture, its urban hierarchy, its outlying geographical position in Europe and concomitant lack transport facilities and infrastructure).
