The conservation and rehabilitation of historical sites in the United States
Abstract
The paper is centred on the outstanding criteria that underlie the way this subject is treated in the United States, hoping by this to offer models of method and focus for use in this country when dealing with the problem of the preservation of our cultural heritage, especially with the architectural aspects of this. To this end, the paper goes beyond being meerly informative and tries to put across guiding principles for field working situations. These, in the main, touch upon the necesary historical training that the technicians involved in such operations must be able to claim. training that would unfold to them the historical neccessities that governed the putting and setting up of any historical dwelling nexus within its particular context. These general principles of operation are lavishly illustrated by references to operations undertaken in the country under study, it being held that these for their international standing and general reference value merit such attention.
