Some thoughts as to tourism, society and land availability in the light of the Lanzarote island plan
Abstract
The plan for Lanzarote's future tackles the tourist question head-on by making the growth and specification of this sector conform to the other requirements, both social and ecological, of this island community, hoping by this to overcome the usual disparity of aims as between two visions of usefulness. To reconcile this contradiction which shows itself at its worst in Lanzarote, a series of suggestions have been made which are based upon a new sort of touristic development. This would be undertaken bearing in mind both the social and territorial essences of the zone to be taken over and thus, instead of facing out or stamping these out, would adapt itself to them. In short, that tourism sought after in the terms of this plan, its placing, rhythms and terms of development, would grow not only according to the wants of the open market but also according to the needs, capacities and true nature of that human and natural world in which it would be planted.
