From the original settlement to the city of La Laguna in the XVI century

Abstract

La Laguna, in the island of Tenerife, is one of the first spanish overseas and colonial cities. The stutterings and contradictions inherent to its role as a testing field, where a definitive «modus operandi» of <down making» has not yet been fully elaborated, is evident. It is thus possible to understand the presente of two fundational nucleii each with different features, within a short period of time. One showing an irregular pattern, the other an orthogonal grid. Both will be the focii through which the twon will be structured. Nevertheless it will finally adopt the orthogonal grid pattern in its subsequent development. The shape of the colonial town will definitely associate itself with a grid pattern with an identity of its own. Therefore we cannot talk about it being a medieval or renaissance city sensu strictu, because although it presents characteristics common to both, it has specific features which already derive from its definition in the «Ley de Indias», and are evident in the built city.
