Abstract

The present day interest in the conservation of the coastline after decades of neglect and ill-usage is seen as running parallel with the drive to make cities fit the demands made upon them by modem societies after the years of indiscriminating exploitation that these too underwent. Both these fields of intervention find common ground in the sea-fronts of cities and in this an outstanding expression for these two-fold objectives in the laying out of one the most note-worthy features of any maritime city: the Promenade.
Drawing on an analysis of the characteristics of some twenty projects and the carrying through of these in as many spanish coastal population centres, a proposed typification of the Promenade has been drawn up and a series of criteria elaborated such as well might serve as touchstones for the laying out and designing of these seaside walks, these criteria being soundly rooted in the double-faceted nature of such walks as urbanistic features of great structural, functional, symbolic and landscaping relevance to the city and as features essential to the protecting and defence of the coastline as such.
This essay summarizes the findings of the author that went into the writting of this soon-to-be-published book.
