Some data as to Urban Reform in 19th century Madrid; La Plaza de Canalejas/Canalejas Circus
Abstract
Madrid underwent important changes during the last century. While its internal urban mesh was altered by reforms in its old heart, it spread beyond its walls, giving rise to what has become known as the "Ensanche" (Widening). An example of the first mentioned type of change would be the re-modelling of the Plaza de Canalejas, hitherto the Encrucijada de las Cuatro Calles (Four Streets Cross Road). The widening of Calle de Sevilla (Sevile Street) gave rise to the remodelling of the circus in question, as this led to greater traffic and pedestrian density at the cross-roads where Príncipe, Cruz, Sevilla Streets and San Jerónimo Mall met. T o answer this new demand José Urioste y Velada, the City Architect planned a circus in 1881, the planning process and the problems met in carrying the results of this through form the main body of this paper
