Abstract

The superstores, a specific form of retail unit, are certainly distinctive not only because of their originality as commercial units but also because they can be considered as a new urban agent that has been promoting urban development (renovation and new operations) and the capacity to generate urban plans. The case study conducted in Madrid shows a larger concentration and dimension of Madrid superstores as against those in other spanish cities, their non-uniform location and distribution and a great diversity in the external features of these stores. The variety of urban land development processes for the superstores installation does not allow for the formulation a single model for this as all the operations were carried out in different ways.
