Self-help building and development

Abstract

The article sets out a conceptual and normative frame-work within which the socio-economic process of "self-help" building is so placed in relation to urban and regional development as to offer an interpretation both of the impact that this mode has had on building programming and the urban and territorial role alloted to both State and Capital in the bettering of the population's living standards, all this within a third world context though, it is felt, this factor does not make the articles findings exclusive to such a context. The field of socially beneficial political manoevre is held to be greater in countries where Capital's institutions have not, as yet, been fully developed insomuch as here the chance of developing modes of community organization outside the normative of developed capitalistic usage not only survives but, if encouraged, could prove fruitful.
